“Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from and roots in blues and ragtime….
Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals,
polyrhythms and improvisation.”
“Soul is a combination of R&B (Rhythm and Blues) and Gospel-Music and began in the late 1950s in the United States of America. While Soul has a lot in common with R&B, it’s differences include its use of Gospel-Music devices, its greater emphesis on vocalists, and its merging of religious and secular themes. Soul music was born in Memphis and more widely in the Southern US where most of the performing artists were from. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says that Soul is “music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of Gospel and Rhythm & Blues into a form of funky secular testifying.”
“Funk is a musical style advanced primarily by African-American artists like James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone in the late 1960s and further developed in the 1970s by other notable performers such as Kool and the Gang, Parliament/Funkadelic and Stevie Wonder “
“Funk’s definitive musical traits include dynamic snycopated rhythyms driven by sixteenth-note divisions of the beat; crisp and active rhythym guitar playing; vocals which tend toward the spoken or shouted variety characteristic of earlier Soul music; technically demanding, melodic bass lines; and horn sections employing jazz-based instruments for percussive effect”
